How to Fix Broken Christmas Decorations and Ornaments
Decorating the Christmas tree is a much-loved tradition, especially when it means bringing out favourite ornaments year after year. But even with careful packing, you might find a treasured decoration in pieces. Others make it onto the tree, only for a loose hanging loop or a curious cat to send them tumbling.
Depending on the material and the damage, a small repair could save them. The first step is checking what the decoration is made from and whether the pieces still fit together.
This guide explains how to fix broken Christmas decorations using Gorilla Super Glue Micro Precise, and what to use for glass ornaments.
Can You Fix Christmas Decorations With Super Glue?
Yes, you can use super glue for small repairs to compatible materials. Gorilla Super Glue Micro Precise bonds wood, ceramic, metal and many plastics. Its controlled dispenser and no-run formula help you apply glue neatly to small broken edges.
Do not use Gorilla Super Glue Micro Precise on glass ornaments, as it will not form a reliable bond. It is also not recommended for polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP) or similar plastics.
Use it for precise repairs that need a fast-setting bond.
For repairable glass ornaments, Gorilla Epoxy is an alternative. It bonds glass and dries crystal clear. For advice on glass repairs, follow Gorilla’s dedicated guide. Epoxy’s mixing, clamping and curing instructions differ from the Super Glue steps below. Shattered or very thin glass baubles may be best replaced.
Expert Tip: Check the decoration’s material before starting. Shiny finishes and paint can disguise what’s underneath. If you’re unsure, ask the manufacturer.
Which Broken Decorations Are Worth Repairing?
Make sure the pieces fit together and consider whether the damaged part supports the ornament’s weight.
What You Need
- Gorilla Super Glue Micro Precise
- All the broken pieces of your decoration
- A protective cover for your work surface
- A small tray to keep loose pieces together
- Suitable cleaning materials for the decoration
- A stable place to leave the repair undisturbed
Work in a well-ventilated area and follow the product label. Keep the glue and small broken parts away from children and pets.
How to Fix Broken Christmas Decorations Step by Step
Step #1: Gather and Inspect the Pieces
Place the broken decoration and its loose parts on a tray. Check for missing pieces and any further damage that could leave it unstable after repair.
Do not attempt to repair badly shattered decorations or fragments too small to handle safely.
Step #2: Prepare the Broken Edges
The bonding surfaces must be clean and dry.
Remove loose dust carefully without rubbing away paint, glitter or other decorative finishes. Choose a cleaning method suited to the material, and avoid soaking delicate ornaments.
Top Tip: Do not glue over loose flakes of paint or decoration. These can come away from the surface and take the repair with them. If the finish keeps flaking around the break, stop before applying glue.
Step #3: Practise the Fit
Fit the pieces together without glue. Check that the broken edges meet closely without force, then note how they line up.
Work out where to hold each piece without touching the bonding surfaces and where to rest the decoration afterwards. If there are several breaks, plan the repair order so each joint remains accessible.
Step #4: Apply a Small Amount of Glue
Tighten the white nozzle firmly to pierce the seal. Gently squeeze the dispenser’s sides and apply a small amount to one surface.
Apply just one drop per 6.5cm². Too much glue can delay setting or prevent a strong bond.
Keep your fingers clear of the glue and avoid spreading it across the surrounding finish. Careful positioning matters.
Step #5: Press the Pieces Together
Align the broken edges and press together for 10–45 seconds. Setting time varies with the material and amount used.
Keep the pieces steady during this stage. Check your alignment as you bring them together, rather than trying to reposition the repair once it has started setting.
Step #6: Leave the Repair to Cure
Allow 24 hours for a full cure before displaying the decoration.
Choose a resting position that puts no strain on the repaired area. Leave the ornament somewhere it will not be knocked or moved while you continue decorating.
Replace the cap securely after use and store the glue in a cool, dry place. Do not refrigerate.
How to Protect Repaired Ornaments
Once fully cured, inspect the repair before displaying the ornament. If the joint moves or the decoration remains unstable, leave it off the tree.
If the hanging loop or its attachment point has broken, do not rely on a glued repair to hold the ornament on the tree. Display it on a shelf instead, provided it can sit securely.
When Christmas is over:
- Wrap fragile ornaments individually, taking care around repaired areas.
- Use divided boxes to keep decorations apart and prevent movement.
- Separate heavier items from delicate ornaments to avoid crushing them.
- Label repaired decorations so you know which need extra care next year.
Give Favourite Decorations Another Christmas
A small break does not always mean saying goodbye to a favourite ornament. Check the material, practise the fit and take time to position each piece.
For suitable small repairs, Gorilla Super Glue Micro Precise gives you maximum control when applying glue to broken Christmas decorations.
