How To Build Your Own Window-Style Mirror
Want to make a room feel bigger without knocking down any walls? A DIY window-style mirror can create the illusion of space and give your décor a stylish lift.

In this article, we’ll show you how to create a window-style mirror at home. Along the way, we’ll share some handy tips for glueing wood to mirrors and tell you everything you’ll need to do this fun project.
By the end, you’ll have a customised mirror that instantly makes any room feel brighter and more spacious. Let’s get started!
Tools and Materials You’ll Need For The Job
- Plain mirror (new or repurposed)
- Plywood strips (quantity and size will depend on your mirror dimensions and chosen design)
- MDF sheet (cut to the same size as your mirror)
- Measuring tape
- Saw (if you aren’t using pre-cut wood)
- A mirror adhesive: The best glue for your mirror project is Gorilla Grab Adhesive Crystal Clear because it stays flexible when exposed to humidity and won't leave visible marks. Other adhesives that will work include contact adhesive or Gorilla Glue Clear.

Step 1: Measure and Cut the Plywood Strips
Plan your design: Decide on the style you’d like to achieve. For our example, we divided the mirror frame into nine sections:
- 4 x outside pieces
- 2 x vertical inside pieces
- 6 x smaller horizontal inside pieces
Cut and paint: Measure each strip carefully and cut it to size. Paint or varnish the wood strips, then let them dry.Keep in mind that if you want to place it in an area with high levels of humidity, like a bathroom, you'll need to use a silicone sealant or protective coating to prevent the frame from warping over time.

Step 2: Add an MDF Backing for Wall Mounting
Measure and cut your MDF: If you plan to mount your mirror to a wall, you'll need to create a mirror backing out of MDF for added support and to allow you to add fixtures later.
Add glue to your mirror: Apply Gorilla Grab Adhesive Crystal Clear to the reverse side of the mirror in a zig-zag pattern. See the image below to get an idea of how much you’ll need.

Press and secure: Place the MDF sheet on top of the adhesive and press down firmly for about 60 seconds to bond the mirror and wood. Wait 24 hours for the adhesive to cure fully.

Step 3: Attach the Wood Strips to the Mirror
Clean all surfaces: Before applying adhesive to your mirror, wipe and clean the surface with a household or glass cleaner. Additionally, wipe down your wood strips with a dry cloth to remove dust.
Apply adhesive to wood strips: Add small dots of Gorilla Grab Adhesive Crystal Clear along the back of each wood strip, spacing them around every 2 inches.
Position your mirror: Lay the mirror flat and carefully place each wood strip in your planned arrangement.
Press and hold: Press each strip firmly onto the glass for about 60 seconds to help the adhesive bond, and wipe away any excess adhesive with a clean, dry cloth immediately.
Allow to cure: Once you’ve attached all the strips, let the mirror sit undisturbed for 24 hours as the adhesive cures.

Step 4: Place Your Mirror and Style It
No matter where you place your new window-style mirror, it will bring depth and style to your space, making any room feel more open and inviting.
Depending on your desired position, add hooks to hang your mirror. A nail-free alternative is to use Gorilla Mounting Tape.
You can also lean it against a wall or mantel to create a relaxed, modern look without drilling holes or hammering in nails.
